“A grassroots movement is a social or political movement driven by groups of ordinary citizens rather than politicians or other influential leaders. Grassroots movements are often characterized by their bottom-up approach…” (Quorum, n.d.).

Where do the donations go once given to Teri?

Since Teri Hourihan has elected to be a clean elections funding candidate, the limits on giving to her is a maximum donation of $220. This money is called “early contributions” before the funding from the state is paid to Teri for the campaign.

The donation money is used to buy supplies, marketing material, campaign signs, and travel expenses when necessary.

The donation money is never used for personal gain or use and all donated money is under the strict watch and eye of the Arizona Secretary of State.

What is a clean funding candidate?

In Arizona candidates running for office can elect to be either a clean funding candidate or a private funding candidate. The clean funding candidate does not take any money from corporations, businesses, PACs, or other organization but only from individual people. There are limits for individual donations and the candidate can qualify for the clean elections funding once they earn the number of $5 contributions required for the office seat they are running for. This funding pays for the candidate’s campaign. Once the campaign is over, all remaining funds remain with the state and the community.

Teri Hourihan has chosen to be a clean elections funding candidate. She believes that corporate money leads to decisions by elected officials that outweigh the voice of the community.
